Squid who? Squidoo. It’s a relatively new web service that allows people to share their expertise online. I’ve been lucky enough to participate in their beta program, and it holds promise.

So how does it work?

The basic idea is that you - as an expert - create “lenses” that bundle your personal expertise. You - as a consumer - search for lenses that focus on your interest instead. These lenses are more or less collections of links, RSS feeds and other web resources.

So is it just a link page, then? Yes, it is. With the added bonus that those lenses are

  • Tagged. No more wading through web sites that accidentally miss one of your search words. If the search word is found, the page is relevant
  • Rated. You can skip the crappy pages, spam pages also see a fast elevator downwards - in short, you actually can find relevant data.
  • Attached to a lensmaster. There’s an actual person behind the web page. It’s not just an anonymous page any more.

And for the people building lenses (”lensmasters”), you’ll get a cut of squidoo’s ad revenue. Plus, since you can link to your web page, GoogleRank.

So go on, give it a spin. You know you want to!

I think it’s a great idea. I stumbled upon it yesterday (haven’t been keeping up with SG so I only vaguely remembered the word) and immediately set about building a lens.

It reminds me of Epinions, back when it was cool–people recommending stuff to other people, who came recommended.

(See, Robert…all-geeky websites get hits, too!)
