More updates: iCalFix 0.5 released

Update2: Ran into another kGTD problem. Fixed now – you’ll need iCalFix 0.3.1

Update: Yesterday night, I made a mistake and uploaded the wrong file. Thanks to Dalton for pointing this out. I’ve uploaded the correct file now. If you downloaded iCalFix before 9:30 am PST, you should re-download. The old iCalFix simply doesn’t start.

After much interesting insights into iCal, I’ve reached completion – you can download version 0.3 of iCalFix. Again, for those who’ve not seen it yet: iCalFix is an extension to Apple’s iCal calendaring application, and it automatically adds an alarm to newly created events.

So what’s new this version?

  • The last alarm settings you entered will be re-used for bulk settings
  • You can specify message-only alarms. Simply set the alarm sound in the plist file to an empty string
  • Fixed a compatibility problem with kGTD – Kinkless GTD
  • Last, but not least, alarm sounds can contain strings – finally, you can use “Uh Oh” as your alarm sound!”

Unfortunately, the preferences pane put up way more resistance than it should have, so it got cut from this revision. It’s postponed to 0.4 – which will happen March 15th.

As a result of this unfortunate development, I’ve decided to put quite a bit more time into iCalFix – so there’s a good chance all the feature requests you mailed me might come true. Additional feature requests, feedback, questions are always welcome at rob [dot] blum [at] gmail [dot] com.

Part of this stepped-up effort is an iCalFix announcement list – the form is coming to this web site, but if you want to sign up already, just send me mail at the address above.

hmm…odd. doesn’t seem to work for me. I’ll give the older version a try and see if that works.

Hi, looking and working great in iCal. KGTD still has problems so I had to revert to version 0.1 again for which kgtd-synching works. Other users seems to have problems as well: http://kinkless.com/node/216

Unfortunately I’m still getting having the KGTD sync error. iCalFix works fine (great!) alone but I can’t sync in KGTD without getting “AppleScript reported the following error: iCal got an error: NSUnknownKeyScriptError”.

Yup – works for me! Awesome app, thanks.

Good to hear. As far as I know, 0.3.1 has all kinks worked out. Onward to 0.4…

    Hi Robert,

Yes, that is a mistake. I caught it after I uploaded 0.3.1, but I didn’t want to upload yet another version – the contents are up to date except for that number.

Wonderfull, thanks a lot! If ever anyone could figure out how to change the default snooze-times of the iCal Reminderwindow… I need something like 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 4 hours, 6 hours in addition to the available times. Does anyone know how to change/add these?

    I’m not getting anything. I have a G4 running 10.4.5 and iCal 2.0.3 (1055)

  12. Robert Blum wrote on 28. Mar 2006

John/Jonas: It’s an Intel-only issue, as far as I know. I can’t resolve that right now, since I don’t have an Intel Mac. Hopefully, that’ll be resolved for 1.0 which is due in about 2-3 months.

I am sorry I can’t offer any faster resolution to this.

    Hi Robert!

I just bought an Intel Mac Mini… and I’d really really love to use your extension! If the reason you haven’t updated for Intel yet is because you don’t have an Intel Mac to test on (perfectly understandable :) )… I’d be happy to volunteer to test/recompile it for you!

    Let me now.

I’m trying. It’s hard to do without an Intel Mac.. The good news – funds are almost complete. PowerBook (sorry, MacBook Pro) here I come!

Can I just add my voice to the chorus of requests for iCalfix for Intel – will be so good to have my alarms working again! :)

    Sweet! Worked perfectly (on powerpc)

  21. CheapIrish wrote on 16. Jan 2008

Does this work with Leopard? I tried it but when I opened iCal a dialog box came up saying it hasn’t been tested with iCal v 3.0.1, so it didn’t load the iCal Fix. Sure would like to be able to set default alarm times.

Is it just me or is ical boring. I am used to using palm desktop with all the features and category colors.. i now really have ical. it’s so limited. please… please…. please could someone write a plugin that gives it more color perhaps even some themes- I am partial to wild colors like fushia and purples. Please save me soon from the boring interface that is ical..

  23. Rachel 'Groby' Blum wrote on 12. Sep 2009

I fear that’s not very likely. iCal is the right application for people who like boring, functional interfaces. There are plenty of calendar apps out there that go wild with colors ;)
